##### to change the Grub background #############
mkdir /home/tmp
cp /boo/message /home/tmp
cp message message.old # backup you old message
cd /home/tmp
cpio -idv < message ### extracting message which is a cpio archive
ls /home/tmp
cp /downloaded/image.jpg /home/tmp/back.jpg ## copying your image to back.jpg
ls | cpio -ov > ../message ### compressing new message with cpio and saving it outside the current working dir
remember to delete the message from /home/tmp ..then compress
mv /home/tmp/message /boot/message ## moving the new grub message to the default location
rm -rf /boot/temp
########################################

###### how to create bootsplash #############
how to extract initrd image
# cp /boot/initrd-2.6.27.19-5-pae /home/tmp
# cd /home/tmp
# gzip -dc initrd-2.6.27.19-5-pae | cpio -id
# vim /etc/sysconfig/bootsplash -->THEME="SUSE" change it to "NINO"
# cp -av /etc/bootsplash/themes/SLES/ /etc/bootsplash/themes/NINO
# vim /etc/bootsplash/themes/NINO/config/bootsplash-1280x1024.cfg --> how to determine 1280x1024
# grep bootsplash /var/log/boot.msg --> see the resolution that boot loads
change the directory location of the image file in bootsplash-1280x1024.cfg file
# SuSeconfig
# now copy your image that you wanted in the bootsplash to /etc/bootsplash/themes/NINO/image/bootsplash-1280x1024.jpg
make sure that the copied image size is less and the resolution is less....use Ivan Image Converter to reduce the size by reducing the image quality...or try gimp by saving the image with 14color hit Alt+i or right click on the image and click on Image->Mode->Indexed...In the Indexed Color Conversion dialog that appears, click on the radio button "Generate optimal Palette" and in "# of colors" enter 14. Click OK.(The image should be of only 14 colors)
Finally when you have saved the image is correct location....time to make the initial ramdisk
# mkinitrd -b /boot -k vmlinuz-2.6.27.19-5-pae -i initrd.newsplash -s 1280x1024
# vim /boot/grub/menu.lst
change the file name of initrd to initrd.newsplash --save
# shutdown -r now
WOOLA
######### Try the same with silent image ######
for silent image --> add "splash=silent" in grub conf file
######## Try to edit the suse log #############
######## Try to change the boot up color text ###########
